This website is a response to the oft heard call from Geographic Information Systems (GIS) people “They just don’t get it!” Resources, ideas and simple, lively examples help you explain to non traditional users in business and the community how you and your data can help them improve the way they work.
Mashups are ideal because they combine lots of data in a familiar and easy to use website or mobile app. The new insights they bring create an appetite for more data. Which brings me to a passion I share with WWW inventor Tim Berners Lee …data sharing.
Data is everywhere. We can convert it from one format to another, but tracking it down and being able to use it effectively is another matter. So data gets duplicated, time is wasted and poor decisions are made. My goal is to help overcome the concerns that inhibit data sharing, applaud those who share and trumpet the economic and social benefits when they do.
There are fantastic resources in Australia and around the world to explain GIS and the value of spatial information but they can be hard to find. I have started a collection of video examples, careers information, mashups, introductory guides . Please explore them, comment on the blog and send me your own links or ideas.
